Live Surgery Meets Real-Time Education – BirdDog

Live Surgery Meets Real-Time Education

Epworth Hospital, AGORA & Remedi Leverage BirdDog for Next-Level Medical Training.

When A/Prof Alex Ades performed a live endoscopic hysterectomy at Epworth Hospital as part of the 2025 AGORA Advanced Gynecological Laparoscopy Course, the operating theatre became a live classroom powered by Remedi and BirdDog.

The ground-breaking surgery was streamed in stunning 4K clarity to a room of specialist doctors at the Richmond Rowing Club. Thanks to BirdDog’s cutting-edge PTZ cameras and Remedi Pro’s remote control and multiview capabilities, the audience didn’t just watch — they experienced the surgery in real-time, with all the interactivity of being in the room.

The Challenge

Create an immersive, low-latency educational experience where doctors could observe a complex laparoscopic surgery — live — without compromising visual quality, interactivity, or the sterile integrity of the OR.

The Setup

  • Surgery Location: Epworth Hospital, Melbourne.
  • Audience Location: Richmond Rowing Club, Melbourne.
  • Surgeon: A/Prof Alex Ades.
  • Moderator: Dr. Omer Mor (on-site at AGORA).
  • BirdDog Gear: X1 Ultra & MAKI Live.
  • Backbone: Remedi Pro — remote control, multiviews, P2P switching.
  • Extra Layer: Additional MAKI Live on-site for audience interaction and Q&A.

The Results

Near-zero latency, 4K video with crystal-clear audio.
Setup completed in minutes, with minimal OR disruption.
Real-time learning: doctors saw exactly what the surgeon saw.
Moderated Q&A enriched the educational experience.
Entire session recorded for future reference.
Audience praised both the quality and interactivity.
Reinforced Remedi as a leader in surgical training solutions.
Supported AGORA’s mission to advance women’s healthcare.

Why It Worked

The X1 Ultra delivered broadcast-level precision from the main operating angle, while the MAKI Live provided stunning POV shots from within the surgical field. Remedi Pro tied it all together, enabling full camera control and seamless source switching remotely. To close the loop between the theatre and the audience, a second MAKI Live captured the Q&A session live from the Richmond Rowing Club,  turning passive viewing into an interactive experience.

The Bigger Picture

This wasn’t just a livestream, it was a milestone in the future of medical education. With BirdDog and Remedi, AGORA brought real-time surgical expertise to life, proving that with the right tech, distance is no barrier to training the next generation of medical professionals.
