Immersive 3D with King Kong – The First Real-Time Anamorphic Selfie

The Background

At Studio City, one of Macao’s largest and most innovative casinos, Idnerd Studio and D’strict teamed up to redefine the entertainment experience. Known for their expertise in gaming solutions, Idnerd collaborated with D’strict, specialists in creating engaging interactive content for venues such as casinos, museums, and hotels.

Together, they designed a unique project to elevate Studio City’s appeal beyond traditional casino offerings, integrating immersive LED displays, 3D art, and interactive experiences to captivate guests.

The Challenge

Studio City needed a sophisticated system to manage an extensive network of LED displays, incorporating 3D content that would respond to guest interaction. The goal was to create a stunningly visual, interactive experience to attract visitors through pure entertainment, without relying on gaming elements.

The standout concept was the King Kong Selfie, an anamorphic 3D illusion where King Kong dynamically interacts with guests, creating a one-of-a-kind selfie opportunity. Unlike most LED 3D displays, which simply play pre-rendered videos, this installation required a real-time, interactive experience where King Kong would “notice” visitors, respond to their presence, and invite them to take a selfie.

The Solution

The solution provided is based on computer vision and media technology that detects when a visitor entered a designated area and stood still for three seconds. this triggers King Kong to “acknowledge” them on the display.

To feed this engine Idnerd utilized a BirdDog’s X1 camera to enable a live, real-time experience. The X1 camera, positioned 20 meters from the interaction point, played a pivotal role in delivering simultaneously NDI® and RTSP feeds to drive the setup.

The RTSP feed allowed the computer vision software to track and analyze visitor positioning, while the NDI®|HX3 feed integrated into the LED display to create a seamless, three-dimensional illusion.

This solution enabled King Kong to reach out and engage with visitors in real time, creating an unforgettable and interactive selfie moment.

The Result

The interactive King Kong installation has become a major draw at Studio City, attracting crowds eager to engage with this cutting-edge 3D experience.

By enabling live-rendered content instead of pre-recorded video loops, the system created an immersive and highly realistic experience, amplifying guest engagement and visual appeal.

Testimonials

“We never worked with HX3 before, but we decided to try it, and it went incredibly well. The HX3 latency is so low that people don’t notice any delay, and the image quality is fantastic. HX3 surprised us with its low latency and superb quality, even over long distances. Moving forward, we’ll definitely use HX3 in scenarios requiring minimal delay and high image quality.”Peter Wong, CEO, Idnerd

“We’ve used a lot of NDI® technology in our casino projects and have relied on BirdDog encoders and software for some time. Choosing the X1 felt natural as we already trusted BirdDog solutions.” Peter Wong, CEO, Idnerd
